In some states a pharmacy tech certification is a requirement for professional practice. This certification assures that the technician or pharmacist's assistant, has mastered the responsibilities of the job. Certified pharmacists also earn more.

The pharmaceutical industry is constantly advancing with new medications and technologies. Employment opportunities for pharmacy technicians are increasing. More employers are requiring pharmacy tech certification. Job postings specify candidates who are either certified or enrolled in pharmacy technician programs.
 
Before you enroll for a certification program, you need to do some research. Many organizations provide a pharmacy technician certification. Choose the organization with a track record of successfully preparing examinees.
 
Prerequisites for taking the certification examinations

A high school diploma or GED are the usual qualifications. The examinee must not have a criminal record five years before applying. Past conviction for a drug related felony will mean a disqualification.

The applicant must not be under any restrictions from any State Board of Pharmacy. To maintain your pharmacy technician certification status, you'll need to complete 20 hours of continuing education every two years, with one hour devoted to pharmacy law.

PTCB Certification

Pharmacy Tech Certification are granted by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. The PTCB Certification is earned after passing exams. Examples of these are the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) and the Examination for Certified Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT).

The PTCE is a multiple choice 90-question exam administered on a computer.

The test has these concentrations:

1. Assisting pharmacists and patients
2. Maintaining medical inventory and control
3. Assisting pharmacy administration

The test is offered year-round in locations around the country. Test scores will be received by mail within three weeks. The test may be taken as many times as desired. There is a fee each time you register.

ExCPT, now a part of the National Health Career Association (NHA), offers training and education materials. Aides and practice exams prepare students  for the national certification exam. A technician who passes the ExCPT is a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). This certificate means the technician has the necessary skills to assist pharmacists dispense medications. ExCPT exam results are received immediately.

A prospective pharmacy tech may study for an associate in science degree through a pharmacy technician program offered by many universities. One can also gain the work skills to pass the Pharmacy Tech Certification exams through online training programs.

They are usually offered in cooperation with colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. Some online programs offer one-on-one instruction. Courses are usually concluded with an on-the-job internship.

With the population growing older, the demand for health care services, such as nursing professionals and pharmacies continues to grow. For those looking forward to working as pharmacy technicians, a pharmacy tech certification will be an advantage.
